What is a dental bone graft, and why use IV sedation?
Bone grafting rebuilds the jaw for implants and after extractions or gum disease. Here’s how IV sedation keeps it calm, closely monitored, and often forgettable.
You can have implant surgery and bone grafting while you rest comfortably under IV sedation. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterward, so even extensive work becomes manageable.
Dental implants and bone grafting often go together. An implant needs enough bone to anchor securely, so if you’ve lost bone you may need a graft before the implant is placed. A graft adds bone material to the jaw, and over time it integrates with your existing bone to create a stronger, denser foundation. Grafting can also preserve the socket after an extraction.
These procedures can take time, involve several surgical steps, and ask you to stay calm and still throughout. For many people, the thought alone is enough to postpone treatment. That’s where sedation changes things.
We offer oral and IV conscious (“twilight”) sedation. For implant surgery and bone grafting, IV sedation is usually the better fit: it works within minutes and can be adjusted during the procedure until you reach exactly the right level. Oral sedation, a pill taken about an hour before your visit, suits longer restorative appointments that are no more than moderately invasive.
Under IV sedation you stay conscious and breathe on your own while deeply relaxed. A calm, still patient also lets us work with greater accuracy, and more work fits into fewer visits.
I had a three hour dental appointment. I only remember about 10 minutes of it — that’s the kind of dental visit I like! I have had several bad dental experiences in the past, and was anxious about going back to the dentist. It was my best experience at the dentist’s office, ever.
At your free consultation we review your medical history and X-rays and plan your sedation. You’ll receive fasting instructions and arrange a responsible adult to drive you home.
A small IV line is placed in your arm or hand, and local anesthesia numbs the surgical site. Your vital signs are monitored while you rest in a relaxed, dreamlike state.
You rest until the sedation wears off, then go home with your driver. Most people feel groggy for several hours and are back to normal by the next day.
Most patients remember little or nothing. The medications used in IV sedation produce both relaxation and amnesia, and a procedure that takes an hour may feel like only a few minutes.
Implants need enough bone density to anchor securely. If you have lost bone, for example after a tooth was removed or because of advanced gum disease, a graft rebuilds that foundation before the implant is placed.
Often, yes. Because you are relaxed and comfortable, we can usually complete more treatment per appointment, so extractions, bone grafting and implant placement can be combined rather than spread across many visits.
Yes. Conscious sedation has an excellent safety record when it is given by a trained, permitted dentist who monitors you throughout. Dr. Kim holds an Illinois IV Conscious Sedation Permit, is ACLS certified, and our team performs hundreds of sedation cases every year.
At Halcyon Dental, the goal is to help patients receive the care they need in an environment that feels safe and supportive. Dental implants and bone grafting under sedation start with a free consultation.
